“Rabbits” is almost always the first utterance I make on the first day of the month - just in case! Once upon a time, my first words might have been “Hi, hon,” or “Fancy a quick shag?” but nowadays I invariably sneak out of bed while Emma is still sleeping soundly (if not always soundlessly). Downstairs, I check the calendar to see if we have anything important hanging over us, and if it’s day one, I pay lip service to the ancient leporid tradition. Then I slip back upstairs to place the toy rabbit, seen in previous posts, where Emma will see it when she wakes. If things go well for the rest of the month, we both harbour a vague suspicion that saying “Rabbits” was at least partly responsible. We get the same feeling if we neglect to whisper the mantra and things do not go according to plan. But if things do not turn out as expected despite saying “Rabbits”, then we adopt the traditional view that it’s all a load of cobblers. Which it is, of course.
