My new toy

I love books. I love the look and the feel of them. I love the way you can browse through them, flicking through the pages; and the way you can remember a favourite passage in terms of how far down a left- or right-hand page it is. You don’t build up a library of several hundred books without loving them. Having said that, the best Christmas present Emma has ever given me (apart from her body of course) is my Kindle. With the cottage already overpopulated with books, it is already proving a godsend. I find one of its many features particularly useful: point to an unfamiliar word in the text, and you are instantly given a definition from the inbuilt Oxford English dictionary. My chief aim now will be to reacquaint myself with the classics of Eng. Lit. which, unbelievably, can be downloaded for free. The Mill on the Floss, for example, took less than twenty seconds to download, without the use of the computer, and is itemised thus on my Amazon account: £0.00. Now that’s what I call a bargain! Of course, books are more pleasant to handle, but I’m already getting used to the feel of my Kindle, which is not unlike a hardback - and which is not a single book, but potentially hundreds of books. It has always been my practice to have at least two books “on the go” at once. If one happens to be heavy-going, it’s nice to have something humorous (or erotic) to turn to as light relief. I rest my case.
