C and F, our one-time neighbours who moved to a grand house overlooking the town twelve months ago, have kept in touch as they promised. In fact we see more of them now than we did when they lived next-door, frequently going out for a meal as a foursome. Every Monday, when C and I go to our lodge-meeting, F and Emma spend an evening sipping wine and talking girl-talk, before joining us at the pub for dominoes. Well, after twenty-five blissfully happy years together (they tell me), C and F were finally married at the local registry office on Friday, with Emma and me as witnesses. We were honoured to be asked. Then the four of us went for a meal at a rather splendid country-hotel a mile or two out of town. It would have been the perfect location for a wedding party, not to mention a honey-moon. But I gather that their official union was chiefly about securing pension-rights. You have to be practical. The picture, by the way, is of Emma and me at a different wedding a couple of years ago.
