Had anyone asked us years ago to describe our ideal love-nest, we would have described a small cottage in the Welsh hills, far from the madding crowd (but with essential amenities within walking distance). This is it, more or less. We have already lived here for longer than anywhere else, and have no intention of moving. Taking early retirement meant downsizing with a vengeance - from a luxurious four-bedroom detached with double garage, set in a beautiful half-acre garden, in a much sought-after area (to quote from the agent’s understated description), to a tiny terraced cottage without even a back yard to call our own. But we are happier than we have ever been in our lives, and count ourselves amongst the luckiest people on the planet. We are also conscious of the fact that ours will be perhaps the last generation able to retire so early and in such comparative comfort. [Apart of course from the bankers and financiers who got our countries into this mess, and who will still be able to retire and live in luxury as early or as late as they wish.] posted by sooyup on Daily trivia
