Alone at last - almost

Although daughter Eva is still with us, she is at work all day. Our other visitors have gone back to the Emerald Isle, leaving Emma and me quite exhausted and determined to take ourselves off to a comfortable hotel next month to recover (in the time-honoured way shown here). I’m sick to death of making polite conversation. It may seem selfish, but I really do not enjoy having people - even old friends - staying with us for anything more than a couple of days. It’s nice to see them, of course, and a pleasant diversion to talk about old times. But they do seem to take over your lives as well as your home. The need to entertain and remain sociable at all times makes it ten times more wearisome than running a bed-and-breakfast. You wait for them to get up in the morning, cater to their every need during the day, and wait (impatiently) for them to go to bed at night. My preference would be for them to book themselves in to a nearby hotel or guest-house and to meet them on a day-to-day basis - and perhaps not every day. In fact, that’s what Emma and I do when “visiting” relatives. It’s less stressful all round.
