If Im out of doors alone during the hours of daylight, someone is bound to ask Wheres Emma? Similarly, when Emma comes in from a lone trip to the shops, she invariably tells me that so-and-so asked where Alfie was. Its as if everyone in town thinks we are tied together with a very short length of string. We might as well be. On her way to daughter Evas last Friday, Emma sent me a text ten minutes after her bus left the village square. Missing you already. Love you. We exchanged such slushy-mushy texts until we lost the signal - Wales is an inconsiderate, hilly terrain. A text from Chester showed she had arrived: Longing to be with you. Roll on tomorrow night. And last thing at night, Wish you were here, So do I! from our lonely beds. Fewer texts on Saturday as mother and daughter checked out the property market. It started again at seven. See you in three hours! and a village-by-village progress report, until she texted Arrived.
