I never tire of seeing Emma with her assets on display, and she has always been my favourite - almost my only - subject. But photography isn’t easy where there isn’t room to swing a cat. In this case, for example, there is a double-bed between Emma and me - which may be very convenient when we have finished the photo-shoot, of course, but can otherwise be something of a hindrance. Photographically speaking, the main disadvantage of living in a small cottage is that no room in the house lets me get as far away from my subject as I would like. In portraiture and figure-photography, a picture taken at a greater distance, using a standard or telephoto lens, is far more pleasing to the eye than one taken at closer range with a wide-angle lens. And unless the model is at right angles to the lens, foreshortening becomes a serious problem. Finding a wall unencumbered by furniture, radiators, etc., makes full-length pictures awkward. And the seamless backgrounds which once enabled me to take professional-looking glamour shots would be impractical, even if I still had the lighting equipment.
