The quotation will be lost on most people beyond these shores. But if you are a fan of British sit-coms and/or want to discover its significance, you can watch the relevant clip here. It’s well worth the minimal effort. We took a trip to Waterford in Southern Ireland to visit the factory where Waterford Crystal is produced. Sadly, production has been halted - temporarily one hopes - because of the recession. But the exhibition and sales-room remain open to show off the exquisite workmanship. A crystal tankard from which to drink my cool lager would have set me back an equally cool sixty pounds. I think I’ll continue to drink it from the can! But it seems there are plenty of people willing to part with over a hundred dollars for a couple of wine glasses - admittedly ones of incomparable quality and provenance. I didn’t ask the price of the chandelier. There are some places where it is taken for granted that if you need to ask the price, you can’t afford it.
