La belle dame sans merci

The goddess of love can also be cruel and domineering (a concept which Destiny’s pet Chance joyfully embraces). I’m sure there is an element of masochism in all of us, and many men are fascinated by women who use their beauty and sexual charms to ensnare men and toy with them for their own amusement, like a cat with a mouse. Alex and Suze have written many captivating stories of beautiful women who seduce men only to destroy them. I’m reminded, too, of the men in Hammer Horror movies who offer their throats willingly to the beautiful vampire-woman with the heaving bosom. Keats’s poem - with the title of this post - tells of a knight-at-arms who has been enchanted and abandoned by “the beautiful woman who shows no mercy”. Alone and palely loitering, he has lost the will to live - like the many other kings, princes and warriors who have fallen under her spell. It is short, ambiguous ballad, but it has a mythical quality about it which has inspired many artists. I must go now. Emma approaches, with heaving bosom.
