To me the word pussy conjures up a lovable, furry animal which loves to be petted and stroked. There was certainly a time - I remember it well - when it was a particularly apt euphemism for what our Anglo-Saxons ancestors proudly called a cunt. When depilation seems the order of the day, however, I question how appropriate the term pussy really is. Although the lovable and pettable connotations remain, the adjective furry no longer applies. And I think furriness is a key association here. (Which perhaps explains why the euphemism beaver is not in common use for the shaven haven.) Of course, there is one breed of cat born without fur - a true hairless pussy - pictured alongside. It is called a Sphinx and only its mother could love it. I’m not suggesting sphinx as an alternative to pussy, you understand. I don’t think the word would catch on - even if it didn’t conjure up the word sphincter. But for me, pussies should be furry.
