… November is National American Indian Heritage Month. Its purpose is to recognize and honour the original peoples of America. A time, too, to remember the injustices that have been suffered by American Indian people. Throughout the history of the USA, American Indian and Alaska Native peoples have been an integral part of the American character. Against all the odds, America's first peoples have endured, and remain a vital cultural and moral presence, occasionally pricking the conscience of the nation. American Indians possess values and ideas that deserve to be ingrained in the American spirit: the knowledge that humans can thrive and prosper without destroying the natural environment; the understanding that people from very different backgrounds, cultures, religions, and traditions can work together to build a great country; and the awareness that diversity can be a source of strength rather than division. This is Emma in her sexy cat-suit - all dressed up and nowhere to go. Why, oh why, has no-one invited us to a Halloween party? Well, as far as I can discover, it’s because no-one in these parts believes that Halloween parties are for adults. Obviously they don’t know what they are missing. The pernicious tradition of “trick or treating” crossed the pond a few years ago - from the Land of Al Capone to the Land of the White Gloves. Until then, we used to call it “demanding money with menaces” and it was a criminal offence. We are used to the custom now, and sit in silence with all the lights off. But as a nation we have been slow to adopt the tradition of the strictly-for-adults, fancy-dress party in celebration of Halloween. What a pity! [I should perhaps explain that Wales was known as the Land of The White Gloves because a pair of white gloves was ceremoniously presented to visiting judges if there were no criminal cases to be heard - which was invariably the case in God-fearing Wales.]posted by sooyup
