Pictures of Emm
During my days as a mature student, I was in bed in the last stages of recovering from ‘flu. My darling Emma, now the bread-winner, had been rushing home during her lunch break to feed me with chicken broth. [The picture shows how she looked at the time.] Bored out of my mind one afternoon, I staggered to the study and picked up a book at random from the shelf. It turned out to be The Cloister and the Hearth by Charles Read, a book I hadn’t opened since my schooldays, when I studied it for A-level. I quickly realised that the book was too heavy-going, given my mental state. I set it aside and turned on the radio, hoping the BBC could relieve my boredom. An historical drama was about to start - the first instalment of a dramatisation of Charles Read’s The Cloister and the Hearth. I know that rationalists dismiss the concept of synchronicity on the grounds that such coincidences are bound to happen naturally. But when they happen to you, they certainly seem beyond the normal.
